Low taper vs low fade vs burst fade
People use these names like they are the same cut. They are not. Where the short hair starts, and whether the back stays long, changes the whole shape.
If you only remember one thing, remember this. A taper is a cleanup. A fade is a blend down the side. A burst is a fade that curves around the ear and leaves the back.
Low taper
I take the sideburn and the neckline down and leave natural weight everywhere else. From the front it still looks like your hair. From the side, the edge is just cleaner.
Ask for it if you want professional, if you are growing the top out, if your hair is curly and you do not want the sides stripped, or if this is your first time letting someone take clippers to you. It grows out the softest of the three. Most people are happy at three or four weeks.
Say this: “Low taper. Keep the sides full. Clean up the neck and the sideburns.”
Low fade
The fade starts just above the ear. Below that it gets short, sometimes to skin. Above that, the darkness comes back so the side still has shape.
This is the one I like on a longer or narrower face, because it does not shave away the width of the head. It also sits well under a textured crop, a slick back or a mullet. You give up a little grow-out time compared with a taper. Plan on about three weeks if you want it looking just-cut.
Say this: “Low fade. Start it just above the ear.”
If you want it bald at the bottom, add “skin.” If you want to see a shadow of hair all the way down, say “low shadow fade” and I will stop short of bald.
Burst fade
Instead of a line that goes straight around the head, the fade makes a half circle around the ear and then drops. The back keeps its length. That is why it looks so right on curls, waves, and any cut where the back is supposed to be part of the style.
A burst with the back chopped off is just a fade with extra steps. If you want the back short too, ask for a low or a mid, not a burst.
Say this: “Burst fade around the ear. Keep the back.”
It grows out a little faster around the ear than a taper does, because the contrast is higher. Two to three weeks is the sweet spot if the burst is into skin.
How to choose
Pick a taper if you want people to notice the cut and not the fade. Pick a low fade if you want the sides tight but the head to keep its width. Pick a burst if the hair on top or in the back is curly, wavy, or supposed to stay long.
Still unsure? That is normal. The fade placement guide shows all five I do, including mid and high. Or just book a fade and tell me which of those three sentences sounds most like you. I will put it on your head, not on a chart.

Good to know
Is a taper the same as a fade?
No. A taper only shortens the sideburns and neckline. A fade takes the whole side and back down gradually, often to skin.
Which one is best for curly hair?
Usually a burst fade or a curly taper. Both keep the curls as the feature and clean up around the ear and neck.
How often do they need a touch-up?
A skin fade looks sharpest for about two weeks. A low taper or a low fade usually goes three to four.
