How often to get a haircut in Florida humidity

3 min readSage

People ask me for a number. Every two weeks, every four, once a month. The honest answer depends on how short the bottom is, how fast your hair grows, and how much you care on week three.

Humidity on the Treasure Coast does not change how fast your hair grows. It changes how the cut looks while it is growing. Hair swells, curls tighten, and a blend that was invisible in the shop can show a shadow by the afternoon if the weight was left in the wrong place. I cut for that. You still need a schedule.

A simple calendar

  • Skin fade, high fade, or a hard design: every 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Low fade or a burst into skin: every 3 weeks.
  • Taper, scissor-cut sides, textured crop: every 3 to 5 weeks.
  • Beard shape and cheek line: every 2 to 3 weeks. A longer beard can go 4.
  • Kids, if you want it looking done for school: every 3 to 4 weeks. Mornings are easier for the little ones.

If you want it to always look like you just left, a standing appointment is the move. Ask me to set one. Saturdays go first.

What humidity actually does

Fine hair sticks to your forehead. Thick hair gets taller. Curly hair gets shorter and wider, which is why a curl cut that was the right length indoors can look like a different shape in the parking lot.

So I do not chase the picture from a dry climate. I take weight out where it inflates, usually through the sides and the crown, and I leave a little length where you need cover. A textured crop with the right weight removed will look more like itself in August than a heavy style you have to fight with product every morning.

Product helps. It does not fix a cut that was too heavy. If you are using a lot of pomade just to keep it down, tell me. That is a cutting problem.

When you do not need a full cut

If the fade still blends and only the outline has gone fuzzy, book an edge-up. That is the hairline, the temples and the neck, cleaned up sharp, without resetting the whole fade. It is $20. It buys you another week or two before a real appointment.

A beard lineup is the same idea. Cheeks and neck get the line back. You do not have to take the length down every time.

Designs are on a shorter clock. A hard part or a pattern looks intentional for about a week, then it softens, which is fine unless you needed it for a photo or a game. Book the design a day or two before, not two weeks before.

Stretching it

You can go longer. A taper let go for six weeks still looks like a haircut. A skin fade let go for six weeks looks like a shadow with a line in it. If you know you travel, or you only want to come once a month, tell me and I will put the fade lower and leave more weight. It will not be as sharp on day one. It will look better on day thirty.

That trade is the whole conversation. Sharp now, or easy later. Most of my regulars pick a spot in the middle and just come back before they are annoyed by it.

I am at 612 S Colorado Ave, inside El Barbershop, Tuesday through Saturday. If you are not sure which schedule fits the cut you have, book the cut and we will pick the next date before you stand up.

Questions

Good to know

How often should I get a skin fade?

Every two to three weeks if you want it to look the way it did when you left the chair.

Is an edge-up worth it between cuts?

Yes, if the fade itself still looks fine and only the hairline, temples and neck have gone soft. An edge-up is $20 and it does not restart the fade.

Does Florida humidity mean I should cut it shorter?

Not always. Humidity lifts hair. I take weight out where it puffs, and leave texture where it helps, so the cut still sits when you walk outside.
